Close the stopcock before you start
Turn the water off at the internal stopcock and open a cold tap beyond the frozen section. If the pipe has already split, this limits how much water escapes when the ice clears.
Warm gently, never fiercely
Use warm cloths, a hot water bottle or a hairdryer on a low setting. Boiling water, blowtorches and heat guns on full power crack joints, damage plastic fittings and create a real fire risk.
Work from the tap back towards the freeze
Start warming at the end nearest the open tap and move slowly along the pipe. This gives melting water somewhere to escape instead of trapping pressure behind the ice.
Stop if you see damage
Bulging pipe, split copper, weeping joints or damp ceilings mean the pipe needs repairing, not thawing. Keep the water off and book an engineer.
Do not take risks to reach the pipe
Lofts, roofs, icy paths and cramped underfloor spaces are not worth an injury. If the frozen section is hard to reach or you are unsure, arrange a visit instead.

What's usually behind thawing frozen pipes safely
Heat applied too quickly
Rapid heat turns ice to water and steam in one spot, and the pressure that builds behind the remaining ice can split the pipe or blow a joint apart.
Thawing with the stopcock still open
If the pipe cracked while frozen, leaving the supply on means water floods out the second the ice clears, often into ceilings and floors before anyone notices.
Naked flames near pipework
Blowtorches used near joists, insulation and stored items in lofts are a common cause of house fires during cold snaps, and can melt plastic pipe and fittings instantly.
Thawing from the wrong end
