In short

A pilot light that will not stay lit can point to anything from a draught or blocked pilot jet to a faulty thermocouple or gas control issue. KJ Plumbers arranges a vetted subcontractor to attend across the North West, carry out a £50 diagnostic visit, and provide a written fixed-price quote for any repair needed.

Immediate steps to keep you safe

1

Do not keep relighting it repeatedly

If the pilot light goes out again after one or two careful attempts, stop trying to relight it. Repeated attempts can mask a fault and may increase safety risks if gas is not burning as it should.

2

Check for the smell of gas

If you smell gas, turn off the appliance if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, avoid switches and flames, leave the property, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.

3

Keep the appliance area clear

Do not store laundry, boxes, cleaning products or flammable items around a boiler, fire or water heater. Poor airflow can affect combustion and may contribute to the pilot flame going out.

4

Avoid DIY gas repairs

Parts such as thermocouples, pilot assemblies and gas valves should only be checked and replaced by a suitably qualified gas engineer. KJ Plumbers can arrange a vetted subcontractor to diagnose the fault.

5

Make a note of when it happens

Before booking, note whether the pilot goes out in windy weather, after the heating comes on, overnight, or whenever hot water is used. This helps the engineer narrow down the likely cause.

Common causes

What's usually behind pilot light keeps going out

Faulty thermocouple

The thermocouple is a safety sensor that proves the pilot flame is alight. If it is worn, dirty or not sitting correctly in the flame, it may shut off the gas supply and cause the pilot to go out.

Blocked or dirty pilot jet

Dust, soot or debris can partially block the small pilot jet. This can make the flame weak, yellow, noisy or unstable, meaning it cannot heat the thermocouple properly.

Draughts or flue issues

Strong draughts, wind effects, poor ventilation or problems around the flue can disturb the pilot flame. This is more common when the pilot goes out during bad weather or when doors and windows are opened.

Gas supply or pressure problem

If the appliance is not receiving a steady gas supply, the pilot may struggle to stay lit. An engineer can test the appliance and check whether the issue is local to the appliance or needs further investigation.

Faulty gas control valve

The gas control valve regulates gas flow to the pilot and burner. If it is sticking, failing or not responding correctly to the thermocouple, the pilot may not remain on.

Ageing appliance components

Older boilers, gas fires and water heaters can develop multiple small faults at once, including worn seals, weak pilot assemblies and corroded parts. A diagnostic visit helps decide whether repair is sensible.

How KJ handles this

What happens when we're on-site

  1. 1

    Initial safety checks

The attending vetted subcontractor checks the appliance area, ventilation, visible condition and any warning signs before attempting diagnosis.

  2. 2

    Customer symptom review

They ask when the pilot goes out, how often it happens, whether it relights, and whether wind, heating use or hot water demand seems to trigger it.

  3. 3

    Pilot flame inspection

The pilot flame is assessed for size, colour, stability and position. A weak or lifting flame can point towards a blocked jet, draught problem or supply issue.

  4. 4

    Thermocouple and safety device checks

The engineer checks whether the thermocouple is correctly positioned and responding as it should, along with the relevant appliance safety controls.

  5. 5

    Appliance-specific testing

Depending on the appliance, they may check the pilot assembly, gas control operation, burner behaviour, ventilation and flue-related factors within the scope of the visit.

  6. 6

    Written fixed-price quote

After the £50 diagnostic visit, you receive a written fixed-price quote for any repair recommended, so you can decide before further work goes ahead.

FAQ

Frequent questions

Why does my pilot light keep going out?

Common reasons include a faulty thermocouple, blocked pilot jet, draughts, poor ventilation, gas control faults or issues with the appliance’s flue arrangement. A proper diagnosis is needed because several faults can look similar from the outside.

Is it dangerous if the pilot light keeps going out?

It can be. The appliance is designed to shut gas off if the pilot is not safely burning, but repeated pilot failure should not be ignored. If you smell gas, leave the property and call 0800 111 999 immediately.

Can I relight the pilot myself?

You can follow the manufacturer’s relighting instructions if the appliance appears safe and there is no smell of gas. If it will not stay lit, do not keep trying; book a diagnostic visit so the cause can be found.

How much is the diagnostic visit?

KJ Plumbers’ standard diagnostic fee is £50. This covers an engineer visit, after which the attending vetted subcontractor provides a written fixed-price quote for any repair needed.

Will you repair the pilot light on the same visit?

Where the cause is straightforward and parts or safe repair options are available, the engineer may be able to advise on the next step quickly. Any repair is quoted in writing at a fixed price after diagnosis, so you stay in control.

Do you cover my area in the North West?

KJ Plumbers helps customers across the North West of England, arranging vetted subcontractors for boiler, gas fire and water heater issues where suitable coverage is available.

Could the pilot light problem mean I need a new boiler?

Not always. Many pilot light problems are repairable, such as a worn thermocouple or dirty pilot assembly. If the appliance is very old or parts are unavailable, the engineer will explain your options after the diagnostic checks.
