Turn off the water at the stopcock
If a pipe is frozen, close your internal stopcock so that if the pipe has already split, water will not flood out the moment it thaws. Open a nearby cold tap to relieve pressure in the pipe.
Never use a naked flame
Do not use blowtorches, heat guns on full power or any naked flame near pipework. This can damage joints, plastic fittings and nearby materials, and is a serious fire risk in a loft or under floorboards.
Only work where you can reach safely
Do not climb into a dark loft, lean out of windows or work on icy ground. If the frozen section is in an awkward or unsafe place, it is safer to book an engineer visit.
Watch for signs of a split
Bulges, frost patches, damp ceilings, staining or dripping suggest the pipe has already cracked. Keep the water off and get it inspected before refilling the system.
Keep the heating on low
If your boiler is working, keeping the heating on a low background setting helps stop other pipes freezing while you deal with the affected one.

What's usually behind frozen pipes
Pipes in unheated spaces
Lofts, garages, cellars and outbuildings drop well below freezing overnight. Pipework running through these areas freezes first, especially where it has no lagging.
Missing or damaged lagging
Foam insulation that has slipped, split or was never fitted leaves bare copper or plastic exposed. Cold air moving over bare pipe freezes the water inside quickly.
Draughts and gaps in the building
Air gaps around airbricks, eaves, loose boards and cracked render funnel freezing air straight onto pipework, even where the rest of the property is warm.
Long runs to outside taps and stores
Feeds to garden taps, outbuildings and detached garages are usually the coldest and least protected pipes on a property, and are a very common freezing point.
Property left empty or unheated
Holiday homes, rentals between tenants and properties left empty over Christmas cool right through, so pipes freeze along their whole length rather than in one spot.
Low flow or dead legs

How do I know if my pipes are frozen?
The usual signs are no water or a trickle from a tap in freezing weather, a toilet that will not refill, gurgling in the pipework, or visible frost on an exposed pipe run. Often only one or two outlets are affected while the rest of the property is fine.
Can I thaw a frozen pipe myself?
If the pipe is easy and safe to reach, gentle warmth from warm cloths, a hot water bottle or a hairdryer on a low setting can work. Never use boiling water or a naked flame, and turn the water off at the stopcock first in case the pipe has already split.
What happens if a frozen pipe bursts?
Ice expands and can crack the pipe, but you often will not see water until it thaws. Turn off the stopcock, catch what water you can, keep electrics away from the leak and get the section repaired before the supply is turned back on.
