Do not open the boiler casing
You can check the visible external condensate pipe, but do not remove the boiler cover or touch internal components. Boiler work should be handled by a suitably qualified engineer.
Avoid boiling water
Never pour boiling water directly onto plastic pipework, as it can crack fittings or cause scalding. If you are confident and can reach the pipe safely, use warm water from a kettle that has cooled for a few minutes.

Condensate pipes often run outside to a drain. In freezing weather, the water inside can turn to ice, blocking the pipe and forcing the boiler to shut down.

A condensate pipe that is not lagged, or has damaged insulation, is more likely to freeze during cold snaps. This is common where the pipe runs along an outside wall.
Pipe diameter too small outside
Older installations may have a narrow external condensate pipe. Smaller pipes freeze more readily because there is less space for condensate to move before ice forms.
Poor fall or standing water
Condensate pipework should run with a steady fall so water drains away. If the pipe sags or has a flat section, water can sit in the pipe and freeze.
Long external pipe runs
The longer the pipe run outside the property, the more time condensate has to cool and freeze. Rerouting internally or shortening the external section may reduce future problems.
