Boiler frozen fault code — Same-Day Plumber Across the North West
We’ll help trace your frozen boiler fault code and get heat back safely.
In short
A frozen boiler fault code often points to a frozen condensate pipe, especially during North West cold snaps. KJ Plumbers can arrange a vetted subcontractor to diagnose the fault, thaw and test the system where appropriate, then provide a written fixed-price quote for any repair needed.

Immediate steps to keep you safe
Check for gas smells first
If you smell gas, turn off the gas at the meter if safe to do so, open windows, avoid switches and flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not try to reset or repair the boiler.
Do not remove the boiler casing
You can check the display, pressure gauge and external pipework, but never take the boiler cover off. Internal checks must be carried out by a competent Gas Safe registered engineer.
Avoid boiling water on pipes
If the condensate pipe is frozen, use warm water rather than boiling water, and pour it slowly over the affected external section. Boiling water can crack plastic pipework or create a slip hazard as it refreezes.
Use resets sparingly
One reset after thawing a likely frozen condensate pipe may be reasonable, but repeated resets can mask a real fault. If the code returns, stop and book a diagnosis.
Protect vulnerable people and the property
If the heating is off, keep doors closed, use safe alternative heat sources as directed by the manufacturer, and check on elderly or vulnerable occupants. If pipes are at risk of freezing, act quickly.
Common causes
What's usually behind boiler frozen fault code
Frozen condensate pipe
The most common cold-weather cause is a frozen condensate pipe, usually the white or grey plastic pipe running from the boiler to an outside drain. Ice blocks acidic condensate from draining, so the boiler locks out and shows a fault code.
External pipework with poor fall or exposure
Condensate pipes are more likely to freeze where they run outside for a long distance, have shallow pipe fall, pass through exposed walls, or are undersized. Wind chill can freeze even lagged pipework in awkward positions.
Boiler lockout after failed ignition
Some boilers show ignition or flame failure codes when condensate backs up, because the appliance cannot complete its start-up sequence safely. The display may not literally say 'frozen', so the surrounding conditions matter.
Blocked condensate trap or waste connection
A blockage in the condensate trap, waste pipe or drain connection can behave like a frozen pipe. The boiler may gurgle, lock out, or show a code that returns quickly after reset.
Low boiler pressure made worse by cold weather
If the pressure is too low, the boiler may display a fault code and refuse to fire. Cold weather can also reveal small leaks or expansion vessel issues that were previously unnoticed.
Separate boiler fault coinciding with freezing weather
Not every winter lockout is caused by ice. Faulty sensors, blocked flues, fan faults, pump issues or gas supply problems can appear during a cold spell, which is why proper diagnosis matters.
How KJ handles this
What happens when we're on-site
- 1
Confirm the fault code and boiler behaviour
The engineer records the boiler make, model, displayed fault code, pressure reading and what happens when heating or hot water is requested. This helps distinguish a frozen condensate issue from an ignition, circulation or safety fault.
- 2
Inspect accessible condensate pipework
They check the condensate route, including any external run, bends, termination point and signs of ice. Where safe and accessible, they assess whether the pipe can be thawed without damaging it.
- 3
Thaw and clear the likely frozen section
If the condensate pipe is confirmed as the likely cause, the engineer can thaw it using suitable methods and check that condensate drains away properly. They will also look for poor installation details that could cause repeat freezing.
- 4
Reset and test boiler operation
Once drainage is restored, the boiler is reset in line with the manufacturer’s instructions and tested through a heating or hot water demand. The engineer checks that the fault code clears and that the boiler runs safely at the time of visit.
- 5
Check pressure, visible leaks and basic controls
The visit includes sensible checks of system pressure, obvious leaks, programmer or thermostat demand, and any symptoms such as gurgling, cycling or noise. These checks help catch related issues before quoting.
- 6
Provide a written fixed-price quote
If a repair or pipework improvement is needed, KJ Plumbers arranges for the vetted subcontractor to provide a written fixed-price quote before work proceeds. Typical recommendations may include rerouting, increasing condensate pipe size, improving fall, or adding insulation.

FAQ
Frequent questions
What does a boiler frozen fault code usually mean?
It usually means the boiler has locked out because condensate cannot drain away, often due to a frozen external condensate pipe. Some boilers show a specific condensate or drain fault, while others show ignition or flame failure codes.
Can I thaw the condensate pipe myself?
If the pipe is safely accessible at ground level, you can try warm water or a warm cloth on the frozen section. Do not use boiling water, naked flames or electrical heat guns outdoors. If you are unsure, the pipe is high up, or the fault returns, book an engineer.
Should I keep resetting the boiler?
No. After thawing a likely frozen condensate pipe, one reset may clear the lockout. If the code comes back, repeated resets are not advised because there may be a blockage, drainage fault or separate boiler issue.
How much is the diagnostic visit?
The standard diagnostic fee is £50. This covers an engineer visit to assess the frozen fault code, and the engineer then provides a written fixed-price quote for any repair or alteration required.
Why does my condensate pipe keep freezing?
Repeat freezing is often caused by long external pipe runs, poor fall, exposed positions, undersized pipework, missing insulation or a drain connection that holds water. An engineer can advise on a more reliable route or pipework improvement.
Do you cover emergency frozen boiler faults in the North West?
KJ Plumbers serves the North West and can arrange vetted subcontractors for boiler fault diagnosis, including likely frozen condensate issues during cold weather. Availability depends on location and demand at the time you contact us.
Will thawing the pipe fix the boiler permanently?
Thawing may get the boiler running again if ice is the only problem. If the pipework layout is poor, the drain is blocked, or the boiler has another fault, further work may be recommended after diagnosis.
